Description
Astronomy as a subject where the literature of physics come in its full flow therefore is an attractive proposition. It is one field of science that can make a claim as the subject that is ideal forum for exposing them to the literature of science. It is the oldest science, and it is a highly observation-oriented science. Under the name of astrophysics it is also an applied branch of physics and since astronimical objects are isolated, more often than not, they can be idealised as few real experimental objects can be. In addition, most of the current physics syllabus is sufficient to give a flavour of the subject and conversely demonstrate how physics can be effectively used to understand what is trul unreachable. Well explained, astronomy can make science palpable, exciting and real for Students.
It is with this premise in mind that the Astronomy Olympiad programme was conceived. More than a decade ago, we had been playing with the idea of reaching out to students and conveying to them the excitement of astronomy and physics. An occasional ilcture was not enough to convey the full flavour of the subject. It is here that we first encountered the International astronomy Olympiad programme underway in the formal Soviet Union. Open to student of class VII to XI, it allowed us to access those students who were about to decide on their career and future and hence was the precise age group to which such a programme should be addressed.
